Chamonix Valley Mountain Conditions Report - 8 October 2008
Here's the latest news from the Office de Haute Montagne:
As of 7 October 2008
Hiking: With sunshine and the rising temperature, musch of the south facing snow has melted, but there's still snow on the north facing slopes above 2000m.
Rockclimbing: There's still snow on the Aiguilles de Chamonix. The rock is dry on the Aiguilles Rouges side.
Mountaineering: Because of all the recent snowfall, you'll need to use snowshoes for high mountain courses outside of the tracks. There have been climbers on the goulotte Chéré and on the Cosmiques arête. Due to the amount of snow, there isn't yet a track up the Mt. Blanc de Tacul on the normal route. There are tracks going up to the Fenêtre du Tour. Climbers have reported the North face of the Tour Ronde to be in good condition.

As of 4 October 2008
General: The north/north westerly winds have brought cold weather and snow. The snow went down all the way to the Valley floor. This morning we had 70cm of snow at 3600m (at the refuge des Cosmiques) and 30cm at 2300m. When it began to snow yesterday, the snow was very wind affected, but when it really started dumping there was almost no more wind.
