Chamonix is a town within a commune of the same name. The department is the Haute-Savoie, which has Annecy as its capital. The Region is Rhone-Alpes, with Lyon as its capital.

The 1999 census recorded 9,830 people domiciled with a density of 41 inhabitants/km². However, second home owners and renters, many of whom are EU citizens, make a base population closer to an estimated 13,000. When 'seasonnaires' arrive during the tourist seasons, 9 months of the year, these workers, servicing the tourist industry increase the population to about 20,000.

The resident population of the valley is about 10,000. The seasonal workers and tourists can add another 100,000 on any given day in a winter high season week and up to 130,000 in the summer.
