Mountain Guides Festival 2013
From Tue 13 to Thu 15 Aug 2013, The Chamonix Guides Festival: Four days of tradition, solidarity and friendship in Mont Blanc region.
The Guides Festival is the only day, throughout the whole year, that a Mountain Guide may take a day off work. The Guides Associations of Les Houches, Argentiere and Chamonix each celebrate on a different day, so that High Mountain Guides are always available.
As with all good ceremonies, the day begins with formal tone; the official call of the Register, and the admission of new members; passing to a more sombre moment where the tools of a Guide's trade, ice axes and ropes, are blessed and departed Guides are honoured. After that, the programme becomes more upbeat, with a brief award ceremony for the Best Client and then the festivities begin… mountaineering displays, live music, fireworks and dancing.
Proceeds go to the Relief Fund.
