Chamonix.net snow report, March 19th 2017

Awesome spring snow at Les Houches this morning. After rain in Chamonix yesterday, with snowfall above 2000m or so, the snow at treeline refroze lightly overnight, and softened beautifully in mild temperatures this morning.

There were a few centimetres of fresh snow in the high mountain zone today, but not as much as we had hoped for. Still, the sun is out, the snow is soft, and it is turning into a nice spring afternoon around the Chamonix valley, with a few clouds, and almost all of the ski lifts open.

The pistes at Les Houches were deliciously soft, giving some dreamy, creamy corn snow during the morning. There was a mix of sun and clouds, but it was pretty warm.

It was very peaceful up there on the mountain, surrounded by forest. It wasn't too busy, and the birds were singing in the trees.

The lower mountain is a bit patchy in places, but the pistes are still skiable and good until the bottom. The upper part of Les Houches is excellent still. Off-piste is only really feasible above 1800m, in most of the Chamonix valley now, but it is pretty well covered above that.
