Grands Montets - Chamonix.net Valley Snow Report
As I woke this morning, that bloke’s voice form Big Brother came into my head. “Shumonee vullee, dare six. The housemates have been …” etc to be honest I wasn’t quite sure what to do or where to go. Decisions, decisions! The other words in my mind was the Squeeze song “Pulling Mussels from a shell” on account of my cricked neck – I think I got whip lash from the Herse Chairlift as it comes up to speed! Hard man eh?
So feeling slightly blown out after 15,000 metres of descent in 2 days what did I do? Sit in the sun and watch the world go by? Well yes and no. The trouble is this place is just so damn addictive! For breakfast, I had a FAB run down the Point de Vue and spotted a couple sitting on a very nicely placed rock. Mental note – lunch stop!
Then I did another one! Awesome…
I had an hour to kill, er, use in the best possible way, so I hopped onto the Bochard Gondola and descended through the Combe de La Pendant. Fab snow and some pleasantly sized moguls to negotiate.
Meanwhile down in Plan Joran the “Boss des Bosses” mogul race was getting under way. A 45 degree slope with moguls the size of VW beetles anyone? Racing? With two enormous jumps? In a crazy hat and costume? The crowds were LOVING it!!
After a quick Coffee (hey – I got one!) I squeezed an off piste descent below the Herse before joining my reserved cable car. Yet another great drop down the Point De Vue followed til I got to ‘my’ rock. Lunch!!
What a view! The Argentiere Glacier, the mountains and ice behind, tiny whispy clouds in a deep blue sky and behind me an unfeasibly large and steep snow field that I’d had the privilege to ski down 3 times already that day. A guy called Bernard joined me on the outcrop and we had a quick chat and a quasi snooze. I think I heard a few snores!
Yesterday had a similar shape – an intensive morning of skiing, 90% off piste with a relaxing lunch break, this time sitting / lounging on a well appointed metal box up on the viewing platform of Les Grands Montets. I ended up having some nice chats, took some photos of friendly people and of the amazingly agile Alpine Choughs (birds) that somehow manage to eke a living out at this altitude. I really enjoyed the silence, the excited chatter of the viewers (look, there’s Mont Blanc!!) and the swish of the skis on the hard snow over 100 meters below. Magic. Sometimes you don’t have to ski in it, you can just be in it!
So there you go, run after run in blissful sunshine in very ski –able snow. Fancy coming over?
