Travel to Chamonix from Turin by Train

Turin to Chamonix by train is slow and circuitous. The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a road tunnel with no rail option. So the train takes the same route into the Alps as the Milan to Chamonix train: up the Domodossola Valley, through the Simplon Tunnel and into Switzerland, then along the Rhone Valley and over the mountains into France and Chamonix.

There is another option; part rail and part road. Train from Turin up the Aosta Valley, with at least two changes, before reaching Pre Saint Didier. From there, take a taxi through the Mont-Blanc tunnel to Chamonix.

Turin - Chamonix by Train: the Route

From Turin Porta Nuova take the train to Novara and change for Domodossola. This is the fastest and cheapest routing. Alternatives via Rho-Fiera Milano or Milano Porta Garibaldi are slower and more expensive.
From Domodossola buy a ticket to Brig and from Brig go to Martigny but you can buy a ticket to Chamonix Mont-Blanc directly. A further change of trains required in Martigny, from where you take the Mont Blanc Express.

The duration of the journey depends on the connections and this varies depending on the time of day. The minimum time on all trains is 5 hours and 40 minutes.

Turin - Rho-Fiera Milano - Domodossola - Brig - Martigny - Chamonix

At Turin Porta Nuova, the main rail station, buy a ticket to Domodossola. This is a travel with train change in Rho-Fiera Milano. The train trip between Turin Porta Nuova and Domodossola is 2 hours and 59 minutes long. The ticket price starting from €12.40.

Both the SBB and the Trenitalia websites publish timetables and prices.

From Domodossola to Brig, the journey time is 28 minutes. The ticket price starting from €7.50.

From Brig to Martigny, the journey time is 50 minutes. Remeber to buy here a ticket to Chamonix Mont-Blanc. The ticket price is €9.85.

Turin - Pre Saint Didier and Taxi to Chamonix

Another option is to take the train from Turin Porta Nuova to Pre Saint Didier and then a taxi to Chamonix Mont-Blanc.

At Turin Porta Nuova buy a ticket to Pre Saint Didier. Depending on the time of day there are two or three changes required. Three changes: in Chivasso, Ivrea and another one in Aosta. Two changes: in Ivrea and another one in Aosta. The ticket price starting from €10.25.

From Pre Saint Didier take a taxi to Chamonix Mont-Blanc. Distance between Pre Saint Didier and Chamonix: 28.6km. The journey duration is 36 mins.

If you call a taxi from Chamonix Mont-Blanc the approximately price is €135. But you can also take one from Pre Saint Didier to Chamonix.
