  • Rainy days in Chamonix - some ideas

The mountains are not at their best in bad weather, but don't despair, there's lots to do:
    - check
here our Events page to see some Cultural and Sport events
    - You could
practice your French: you know you should.
    - Or go for a walk, at low altitude in the pine forests.
    - For children there are day centres and creches throughout the valley.
  • For Brain Stimulation...

Go to a Museum. The Alpine Museum in Chamonix is well worth a visit.
You can also take a tour down in Sallanches and visit the Mountain Nature Center.

There is also the Galerie du Globe in Argentiere as well as art exhibits in many of the hotels. Further afield, the Art Gallery in Martigny is excellent.

    Head to the
Cinema Vox which plays the latest films from around the world. A selection of French, English and other foreign films (all subtitled in French)  on three screens.   Look for the "vo" or "version originale" (original audio) next to the title to find which films are in what language.

The Chamonix Library is a great place to spend an afternoon. For opening hours:  33 (0)4 50 53 34 82. The Library often has storytelling and various activities for children.

  • ...for the body.

Sports Centres are a traditional refuge. Check out opening times at Chamonix. The Ice Rink is good fun for all the family even in summer.

Bowling Alley has bowling but also Pool, Billiards and Snooker upstairs.

Check out our climbing walls page or drive to the
Rhone Valley at Martigny where the rock dries out very quickly. You can also try
canyoning or watersports which can be fun even in the rain. Never been
mountaineering? Why not go for an initiation on the Mer de Glace?

Take a sauna or jacuzzi, check out our Health, Beauty and relaxation page
  • ...just for fun.

Hit the Casino high roller ! and eat at their restaurant.

Tour the cyber-cafes in town. Just sit at a café, sip a latté or have an apèro, and
practice your French. Many of the
bars in town show all the major sporting events on television.

    Or check out our
Events calendar - there just might be something on.

The Cinema often puts on additional films in bad weather.  English language films are shown regularly. The cinema hotline is 33(0)4 50 53 03 39
  • ...and for making plans for better weather days.

Visit the Office de Haute Montagne at Chamonix located in the Maison de la Montagne at 190, place de l'église, in Chamonix centre for information on conditions of routes and weather. The people there are very helpful.
