Chamonix is famous for its lifts which bring you right up to the glaciers. There was even talk of continuing the Tramway du Mont Blanc to go all the way up to the Mont Blanc summit! Not sure where to go? Have a look at our Sightseeing pages.
The Compagnie du Mont Blanc runs the majority of the lifts in the Chamonix Valley.
The Aiguille du Midi will close 9 November 2008.
The Montenvers Train will close 13-24th October 2008.
Flégère will be open from October 25th to November 5th and the last 3 weekends in November 2008 (as will the Grands Montets snow conditions permitting).Chamonix Lift Status & Maps

Each lift takes you to fantastic heights (quite literally) but certain are more suited than others to certain activities. L'Aiguille du Midi, the Montenvers train, the Grands Montets end the Tramway du Mont Blanc all give access to the Mont Blanc Massif. Flégère and Brévent are on the Aiguilles Rouges side of the Valley. Here's a quick summary by activity:
For sightseeing and a bit of history:
The Aiguille du Midi lift & the Panoramic to Italy
The Montenvers train & its gondola (access to the Mer de Glace glacier)
The Tramway du Mont Blanc (the train which provides access to the normal route up the Mont Blanc)
For climbing: access to high mountain climbs:
