A large avalanche hits two ski runs in La Flégère

Une avalanche d'ampleur touche deux pistes de ski à La Flégère

A large avalanche hits two ski runs in La Flégère

Skiers were buried up to their necks in snow: a large avalanche hit two ski runs in Chamonix.

Around midday on Tuesday, February 24, an avalanche occurred on the La Flégère ski area. The avalanche originated on the slopes overlooking the top of the Floria ski lift. A 100-meter-wide slab of snow swept across the ski runs: the start of the Crochues red run and the Floria black run.

Three people were almost completely buried. These skiers were buried up to their necks in snow. They are safe and sound, and their lives are no longer in danger.

To the best of our knowledge, an avalanche has never occurred in this area before. The avalanche fractured above the Gazex lifts. The snowpack fracture reached a height of two meters, confirming the enormous amounts of snow that fell last week. The total accumulation is over three meters from the last snowfall event.
