Geneva Airport to Chamonix: scheduled bus, shared, private

The short answer

There are three different transfer types you can use to travel by road between Geneva Airport (GVA) and Chamonix:

  • Scheduled bus, from as little as 14 EUR per person, to Chamonix Sud Bus Station
  • Shared door to door transfer, from as little as 40 EUR per person, to your accommodation
  • Private transfer, from as little as 210 EUR per vehicle, to your accommodation, at a time that suits you

All three transfer types can be compared in one search to find the best price and departure time, then booked directly.

How long does the journey take?

The road journey from Geneva Airport to Chamonix takes 1h15 to 1h30, depending on three factors:

  1. The volume of traffic
  2. Delays at the Bardonnex border crossing between France and Switzerland
  3. Weather conditions that affect the road surface

For shared transfers, there is a fourth factor. Shared transfers can take longer when there are several drop-offs or pick-ups. For pick-ups on the way to GVA this is crucial, so once you have booked, the carrier will notify you of the actual pick-up time. With a shared transfer, the carrier takes responsibility for the timing of travel to GVA; with a scheduled bus, you do.

On winter Saturdays most holiday rentals change over. Traffic on the A40 motorway is heavier, so allow extra time on those days. The Geneva rush hour can also slow traffic at the Bardonnex border crossing.

Returning to Geneva Airport by shared or private transfer: your carrier knows from experience how long the journey takes and the pick-up requirements of other passengers. The carrier will advise a safe pick-up time for your flight.

Scheduled bus transfers

Scheduled buses run to a fixed timetable between Geneva Airport and Chamonix Sud Bus Station. Scheduled buses also serve other stops in the valley, such as Les Houches and Argentière. These are separate destinations in the search, so select the one nearest your accommodation.

Scheduled bus transfers do not drop off or pick up at your accommodation. You have to make your own way between your accommodation and the bus stop.

A scheduled bus is the lowest cost way to travel between GVA and the Chamonix Valley. In a live search, all departure times and prices are accurate and reliable. Do not rely on the sample table for your own journey; it is for illustration only. Always make a new search.

Returning to Geneva Airport by scheduled bus: you are responsible for choosing a departure that gets you to the airport in good time for your flight. The bus runs to its timetable and will not wait. On a scheduled bus service, the carrier will not advise a departure time from the Chamonix Valley.

Be aware that in winter, the weather and resulting road conditions can significantly slow travel between Chamonix and Geneva.

Shared door to door transfers

A shared door to door transfer meets you at Geneva Airport and takes you to your accommodation address. You will be sharing the vehicle with other people going to Chamonix.

Departure times are set by the carrier and grouped around flight arrivals, so you may wait at the airport for other passengers. Drop-offs in the Chamonix Valley can extend the travel time: little if you are the first to be dropped off, but considerably if you are the last. This depends on where the other passengers are staying, which you cannot know at the time of booking.

Shared door to door transfers are priced between scheduled buses and private transfers. They cost less than a private transfer and spare you the hassle of moving luggage to or from a bus stop.

Private transfers

A private transfer is a vehicle for your group only. It leaves when you are ready and goes directly to your accommodation.

The price is per vehicle, not per person, so for a family or group of four or more the cost per person can be close to a shared transfer. It is also the most practical option for very early or late flights.

Why book through chamonix.net

  • A TransferFix service. The airport transfer booking service on chamonix.net is provided by TransferFix, a company that maintains stringent controls on carriers and holds them to a high level of accountability, for your benefit.

  • Live data. Prices, departure times and availability come directly from the carriers at the moment you search.
  • A booking is a confirmed booking. Once paid, your transfer is confirmed. No further action is needed.
  • Licensed carriers only. Every carrier holds a valid operating licence, issued by the Préfecture de la Haute-Savoie (Annecy) for French carriers or the Canton of Geneva for Swiss carriers. Carriers must provide TransferFix with a copy of their current licence. If a licence expires, that carrier's services no longer display on the TransferFix platform.

  • Refunds. Some carriers have very restrictive refund policies. When requesting a refund by email, copy TransferFix into the email. TransferFix may be able to assist where a refund request that complies with the contract does not receive a satisfactory response.
  • Your equipment is planned for. Luggage, skis, snowboards and bicycles you bring, and any baby, child or booster seats you need, are all managed during the booking process.
