It just snowed a lot more over the weekend in Chamonix, and now the sun has made a comeback after the storm!
After some sunshine on Thursday and Friday, it snowed about 10cm at 2000m on Friday evening, and then 30-40cm more on Saturday night, with lots more snow showers all day on Sunday, so there is a nice layer of fresh powder in the Chamonix valley and mountains.
The snow line has been below 1000m all weekend, so pretty cold, and today the sun came out. It was nice and cold up at Flégère this morning, with a bit of north wind blowing. The powder was deep and fluffy, and all of the ski lifts were open, after some avalanche control. There weren't too many people around, as the holidays are over for the moment. The wind made for quite an exciting day up there, but didn't affect the snow too much. It was stunning to ski deep snow in the sunshine, especially after last winter with no ski lifts open!
Now all of that new snow has set us up nicely for a sunny week ahead in all of the Chamonix ski areas. There is a cushion of soft snow over the ice, on much of the mountain (except places too exposed to wind). The Nordic skiing trails at the bottom of the valley had lots of new snow, and has great conditions now too.
