Chamonix.net Snow Report, 22nd December 2021

It has been really sunny for most of this week in Chamonix, cold in the valley bottom, but mild on the mountain, with no wind today, and some great skiing conditions. The snow is staying mostly cold, since the sun is at a pretty low angle this time of the year. Brévent, Flégère, Le Tour, Les Houches, and Grands Montets currently have almost everything open for skiing and riding, and beginners areas in the valley bottom are open too. Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers are open for sightseeing, and the Nordic skiing is also very much "on" right now, with great snow conditions at the bottom of the Chamonix valley.

We haven't had any fresh snow since the big storm cycle ended about 10 days ago, but there is a lot of snow everywhere, and there is some active weather in the forecast at the end of this week.

The sunshine is supposed to stay with us until Friday, but the weather forecast is suggesting a wave of unsettled weather starting on Friday evening through the weekend, bringing some welcome fresh snow above 1500m or so. Our local forecast has snowfalls predicted in the Chamonix mountains well into next week, so it could be another big storm cycle setting up. That would mean some more powder days, and a good top-up of snow, now that we have a well-established snowpack base.

Merry Christmas from Chamonix.net!
