A sunny but cold day at Grands Montets today. There is still some good skiing in Chamonix this spring, and a bit of limited ski touring, mainly from the Grands Montets back on the high glaciers, or other areas for the more adventurous ski-tourer...
Today was still windy up high, but more sunny than yesterday, which had some clouds and light flurries in the afternoon. There was another tiny amount of fresh snow up on the mountain (about 2 or 3 cm at 3000m), but nothing worth really talking about. The sunshine was beautiful though, while the cold temperatures and wind kept the snow pretty icy well into the afternoon.
We skied some icy snow at the Grands Montets this morning, before going on a mellow ski tour up to the end of the Argentiere glacier. We didn't ski much back there, but it was a great adventure with an intense blue sky and some gorgeous scenery. The snow was pretty variable - sometimes a bit of windblown fresh snow, and sometimes bare ice - it certainly made the skiing interesting.
There were some people ski-mountaineering on the steeper lines, on what looked like very variable conditions, with just-skiable lines that are a lot less filled in than most years!
The Grands Montets is still holding snow well, especially as this week has been cold! The Pierre-a-ric piste descent to Argentiere is now closed though, as there are too many stones in the middle section. There is good skiing from the mid station at 1900m right up to the summit at 3200m.
The next couple of days at least should continue to be sunny, but probably warmer, so hopefully the snow will soften up nicely around lunch time or so, especially inside the ski area, depending on the sunshine exposure.
