A powder day in Chamonix today! Often in spring we get a weather front with a low-altitude snow-line, and after 1 full week of warm southerly winds, we finally got that last night, with 20-30cm of fresh snow in the mountains, and snow down in Chamonix town...
Grands Montets had some great deep fresh powder today, and we got lucky with the visibility: it was "greybird" this morning, with high cloud, but we could see mostly where we wanted to go, and then some clear spells developed from the western edge of the sky during the day. It was a stunning morning, with clear sky and glowing peaks on the horizon. You could feel ice underneath the fresh snow in places, but for the most part it was great, especially around 2000m, where the underlying spring snow hadn't frozen.
There was no wind this morning, and the snow stayed cold and fluffy, although the temperature was quite mild. Pistes were very nice and soft with the new snow on them.
The Bochard is working fine now, and the Pierre-a-ric is still good all the way down to Argentière. The retour Pendant chairlift is closed now though due to lack of snow at the bottom of it, but you can still ski the pendant bowl and come back through the tunnel to the Tabe chairlift.
The next few days are supposed to continue unsettled, with more snow showers in the Chamonix mountains. We have a bunch more skiing still to do in Chamonix this winter, at the Grands Montets, with the freeride days end-of-season party on May 5th, after 2 days of closure on May 2nd and 3rd.
