The new snow has come in abundance since Friday night, dumping soft fluffy snow everywhere! Saturday there were high winds, with barely anything open to ski in Chamonix, but it was worth the wait, as today the weather cleared up and we got to ski deep powder and smoother pistes than we had last week. With 40-50cm of fresh snow, the Grands Montets was looking very smooth and skiable between rocky outcrops.
The Grands Montets has the most lifts open right now, adding the Herse chairlift today, while the Brevent has a couple of beginner slopes to ski, and the Flegere has 1 more beginners lift open (Trappe). Le Tour and Les Houches both opened a couple more small lifts with green and blue runs, so we are now in better shape than before Christmas.
Of course, there are still a lot of rocks just below the new snow off-piste, but the powder was pretty supportive, and really fluffy, creamy and deep. The pistes were pretty good too - better coverage, and smooth, but crowded, as it is New Years week.
The avalanche risk is high today, and tomorrow morning, but the weather is stabilising, so the snowpack should slowly stabilise too.
