A seriously sunny day today in Chamonix, in the middle of a few stable days, before the next wave of snowstorms comes our way early next week. The snow is great at Le Tour today...
I took the train from Chamonix over to Vallorcine today to access Le Tour ski area from the back gondola. This trip really shows well the 2 sides to Le Tour/Balme: open sunny Chamonix side, and forested shadier Vallorcine side.
The snow on-piste was firm on the shadier side, but softening up in the direct sun this afternoon. Off-piste there is some softer snow in the shade. The air was nice and cold, with not much wind at all. One American that I met on the chairlift described the conditions as "Majestic". The views are certainly spectacular this week, and the snow is pretty agreeable to ski (though there are of course icy patches around, especially on steeper pistes).
The snowpark is looking good too, at Le Tour ski area, on the sunny side. The Grands Montets has a park too at Lognan right now.
The top lift at the Grands Montets is temporarily suspended for a while, for some post storm maintenance. The big snowfalls and wind last week took a toll on some of the equipment around the Alps! Keep checking back for updates on that (and check our news section).
The ridge for the Vallée Blanche is starting to be set up, but the rope is still not attached, and snowbridges on the glacier crevasses are still not super strong yet. Talk to a mountain guide for more information.
Don't forget that there are excellent nordic skiing conditions in the Chamonix valley bottom at the moment too. There is probably lots more low altitude snowfall coming during the next week...
