It is looking nice and wintry in the Chamonix valley these days. The Covid pandemic continues around the world, and as a result, the ski lifts are still closed in Chamonix. We are hoping they will open later in the winter, but for the moment we will have to wait and see.
Meanwhile the town and valley of Chamonix remain open, with restrictions. There are lots of activities to do here without the ski lifts running. The Nordic skiing conditions are amazing right now (lots of snow in the valley bottom), and snowshoeing and ski touring are possible. The Maison de Montagne (Office de Haute Montagne and Guides Office) in the centre of Chamonix, next to the church, is a great place to start for more information. You can find a mountain guide for ski touring and snowshoeing adventures, and there is also posted the local weather forecast and avalanche bulletin.
Although restaurants are still closed for a while longer, many of them are staying open for take-out food, and supermarkets are open as normal.
The avalanche risk is pretty high this week, with lots of new snow, and the ski areas are doing only very limited avalanche control while the lifts are not running, so it is recommended to find a mountain guide for any mountain adventures.
