A sunny and cold day today in Chamonix, with good skiing at the Grands Montets.
We had some clouds in the middle of this week, and then it snowed very lightly on Wednesday night: about 5 to 10cm of really light fresh snow, which softened things up a bit.
The Grands Montets had some great skiing again today, with a clear sky. It was really windy in the high mountain, from the North, but I didn't feel the wind too much in the main ski area, just right at the top of Bochard. Pistes were quite icy this afternoon, but good to ski with sharp edges, and off-piste was generally pretty soft, thanks to the recent small snowfalls that we have had.
We still have lots of snow in the Chamonix valley and mountains, even though we haven't had many big storms recently. The cold weather and small snowfalls have been keeping the snow for us, while we wait for the next decent snow.
The Brevent Planpraz access gondola was supposed to re-open today, but it is still being fixed... the latest that I have heard is that they should be ready to re-open it on Sunday, or even possibly tomorrow afternoon. The Brevent ski area remains open, accessible from Flegere. Meanwhile on the Aiguille du Midi, the ridge has now been equipped with a rope for the Vallée Blanche, so find one of our Chamonix valley mountain guides for an adventure ski trip of a lifetime.
There is some active weather coming in from Sunday, with some decent snowfall predicted during the first half of next week, and cold temperatures, with snow at low altitude, so fasten your seatbelts...! Hopefully it will be a big storm again, but if it is, expect avalanche danger to be high again, as the cold weather has been developing the weak layers in the lower snowpack.
