A big storm day in Chamonix today!

Finally, after a month with not so much snowfall, we have the next big storm system of the winter giving us a good kicking, since yesterday evening. There was some fresh snow last night, above 1200m, with lots of wind, and today the Chamonix ski areas were closed, due to the wind, except for Les Houches, which is more protected, and was all open, with good skiing, and good visibility on tree-lined pistes.

Now it is also dumping snow in Chamonix town and below 1000m this evening, with more to come for the rest of the week!

This afternoon, at Les Houches, it was raining at the base of the mountain, but snowing higher up. There were between 5 and 35 centimetres of new snow at the top, depending on where you looked (thanks to wind distribution), so you could find some great powder if you looked hard enough.

Pistes were mostly quite soft today, and very nice to ski. There was bit of ice here and there, and it was quite slushy near the bottom of the mountain. The pistes are open all the way to the village now, and it is looking ready for the Kandahar ski race on the 8th of February.

By the end of the afternoon, the snowline had dropped, and it was snowing heavily below 1000m at the bottom of the ski hill. The forecast is for a lot more snow tonight (maybe 30 to 40cm more in the mountains), then maybe a short gap tomorrow, before more snow in the mountains on Thursday and towards the end of the week (with a rising rainline). This is great!
