Happy New Year! The snow conditions haven't changed much since my last report, and this afternoon I found mostly icy pistes and a cold north wind at Flegere. It is good that it is staying cold, though, as we keep the snow that we already have...
La Flegere was beautiful this afternoon, but cold with that light northerly wind. The snow was mostly icy, but some pistes were better than others. It seems that the steeper runs are becoming more scraped than the more mellow blue runs - there are still lots of people in town this week! Less steep parts of the mountain were pretty good to ski. You need good sharp edges, though! There was some live music on the sunny restaurant terrace at mid station this afternoon.
Off-piste was pretty rough where it has been cut up and refrozen. The sun may have been softening it during the day, but when I was there at 3pm today, even the south facing stuff was pretty hard! There are some areas with moguls, which make it a bit more easier to ski. All of the ski areas in Chamonix will have pretty similar conditions right now, with better snow higher up near the top of Brevent, and up on the upper lifts of the Grands Montets (Bochard and Herse). I would expect more moguls in those areas, though. The top part of Les Houches looks good, and there is a way to ski down all the way, but the lower part will be steep and icy.
There are some possible light snow showers forecast for Sunday, but they are not expecting much fresh snow to fall. Apart from that, the stable sunny weather is supposed to be with us for the next few days, and well into next week as well, but it should be staying cold. Next week should be quieter, with not so many people in Chamonix.
