Lots of snow for skiing in the mountains, and very sunny the last few days: perfect for the holidays.
Happy New Year from chamonix.net. It has been warm in the sun, up on the mountain this week, but the snow is still good, even though it hasn't snowed for nearly a week.
Today at Flegere there were a lot of people, but no line-up at the bottom to get up the mountain, like there used to be, thanks to the new gondola from Les Praz (I went up around noon)! The snow is staying cold on shady slopes, and softening up during the day in the direct sunshine, but I wouldn't say that it is slushy. The snow conditions are pretty great, and the coverage is good in most places that we ski around Chamonix. The snow can become quite hard overnight, especially when the sky is clear, so watch out for early morning icy pistes, and on shady slopes all day.
There was a lot of wind in the high mountain today, ahead of a weak weather front. You could feel the wind, maybe above 2300/2400m, above Index, but at 2000m it was beautiful.
Tomorrow there are supposed to be some clouds, but not much in the way of precipitation, and then the weather should be better again from the weekend for a while.
The nordic skiing is open now in the valley bottom. There is some beginner skiing also available at Planards in Chamonix town, and the Brevent top lift should be opening within the next few days, hopefully...
