A wonderfully cold morning for piste skiing in Les Houches.
The weather is still mostly stable, apart from some cloudy periods yesterday, and a sea of cloud in the valley today. It has stayed cold, which means great conditions for making snow, and Les Houches has lots of snow cannons along most of the pistes, so the coverage isn't bad at all, although off-piste is somewhat lacking!
It was a fresh cold morning, especially inside the banks of freezing-fog, but the snow was actually pretty good early on. Many of the pistes were freshly groomed with newly made snow, and there were not many people around, so the skiing was mostly soft, with some icy patches here and there. The snow was quite variable, though, and it was hard to tell where the transitions were between fresh groomer, freshly made snow, and ice. I think that later on today when it gets busier, it will be more icy.
As for snow in the forecast, well today we didn't get the flurries that were predicted, but there is a small snowfall setting up for Tuesday, with maybe some more active weather coming after that, so we will see... We could certainly use a lot more natural snow in Chamonix!
