Snowing in Chamonix today, with lots of wind! Calmer tomorrow, with maybe some sunshine, but the rest of the week looks to be continuing snowy...
It has been a wild stormy day today in Chamonix town and in the mountains. All this week, we are under a big storm cycle: it started on Saturday and Sunday with rain above 2000m, and now the snowline has dropped to below 1000m. There was lots of wind yesterday and today, with many lifts closed, but some managed to stay open, with interesting skiing conditions (a bit soggy yesterday, and cold but with fresh snow today!) We last saw the sunshine briefly on Friday morning, skiing the fresh snow from Thursday, which was pretty good, before the clouds rolled in.
This morning at Grands Montets they were able to get the Bochard and the Herse open for a short while for some windy storm skiing/riding in the fresh snow. It was hard to tell how much it has snowed recently, as yesterday's wet snow high up has compacted and refrozen, and today's fresh snow has been drifted by the wind. Here and there were icy patches in between deep drifts of powder, where the wind had blown the snow around, but with the low visibility it was hard to see where they were!
After the wind got stronger, the higher lifts, and even the access lift to Plan Joran were closed and put on hold, and it was time to go into the cafe for a hot drink! The Pierre-a-ric piste down to Argentiere was pretty solid after the refrozen rain, but it had some soft fresh snow on top, which made it not too bad early on.
The rest of the Chamonix ski areas took a bit of a beating today too, with Le Tour closing early, and Index and the Brevent summit closed for the day, but it is snowing a lot, which is great. Les Houches stayed mostly open, as it is more sheltered from wind. Tomorrow should have some quite good skiing up high, and there is supposed to be a clear-ish spell of weather during the day, before more big snowfall comes in from tomorrow night, and for the rest of the week (hopefully with a bit less wind!)
