Chamonix.net snow report, March 1st 2020

Lots of fresh snow this week in Chamonix.

Since Tuesday it has been snowing on and off in the Chamonix valley and mountains, with some sunny spells in between weather systems.

Thursday was a big powder day, with 30cm of new snow above 2000m, and more heavy snowfall in the afternoon/evening. Then there was another 20-30cm of fresh snow with a clear sky for Friday. On Saturday afternoon and evening there was heavy rain in Chamonix town, with snow above 1200m, and 30 more centimetres in the mountains, ready for more sunny powder this morning. Now this evening the next showers have come in, and it is set to continue unsettled well into the next week, with a dropping snow-line back to the valley bottom!

Today was pretty sunny in the morning, warm in the mountains with some clouds and fresh powder all around the Chamonix valley. This afternoon the clouds had started building more, but it was good to be at Les Houches, where the tree-lined pistes give good visibility in flat light conditions.

The temperature at the top of Les Houches was pretty mild, but not so hot, thanks to the clouds and a cool breeze. The snow was mostly soft, and more slushy on the lower mountain. The pistes are skiable all the way to the bottom, thanks to man-made snow, despite there not being much natural snow below 1500m.

Above 1600m or so there is still quite a lot of snow in all of the Chamonix ski areas, and the next few days should add a lot more to that! Expect more deep powder, variable visibility, and some temporary lift closures for wind and avalanche control.
