Warm sunshine and spring snow above Chamonix to end this week. Since Monday it has been sunny, and progressively warmer every day, and this afternoon there was some excellent spring skiing at Le Tour.
The air is still cool up in the mountains, even with the warm sun today, so on shadier slopes the snow is staying harder. In the sun, it was slushy and soft, but not too soggy and soupy. Off-piste the snow was a bit heavier, but reasonably smooth. There didn't seem to be a single cloud in the sky today, which is pretty impressive!
The snowpark at Le Tour is looking good right now - worth checking out if you like jumps. Pistes were excellent this afternoon, and not very busy.
The other Chamonix ski areas will also have good spring skiing right now, with warmer snow at Brevent/Flegere, and colder snow at Grands Montets. Early in the morning the snow will be hard everywhere, and softening throughout the day. Les Houches is looking good, especially at the top, and Courmayeur still has snow, but a bit less than on the French side. Despite it being spring, nordic skiing is still on in the Chamonix valley, in Chamonix town, Argentière, and Vallorcine.
An update on the Bochard cable car: they are working to fix the problem that is linked to climate change and permafrost, but rather than one week of closure, they are now extending that, and they are hoping to be back open on March 30th, next Saturday. Meanwhile, the sunshine is set to stay with us for the weekend at least, and probably into next week - it is a great opportunity for a spring riding session in Chamonix, before the next snowfalls come in.
