The Mont-Blanc tunnel will be completely closed from September 1 to December 12
As happened i the autumn of 2024, the same will happen this year. The Mont-Blanc tunnel between Chamonix and Courmayeur will be closed for 15 weeks in the fall of 2025.
The dates and times for the complete closure are from Monday 1 September 2025 at 5 p.m. to Friday 12 December 2025 at 5 p.m.
Renovation of this 60 year old tunnel will take many years.
At the moment, the engineers are still in the planning and discovery phase. They are testing different techniques that are applied to the dome (vault) of the tunnel to determine which is the best, and not necessarily for the whole tunnel, as the rock structure varies along the length of the tunnel.
In time, the engineers will figure it what works best for each section of the tunnel.
This year the engineers will take down part of the test section from last year, to analyze its effectiveness.
As well as examining part of the test section from last year, the engineers will apply 2 new test sections covering a total of 254 metres of the vault.
The Mont-Blanc tunnel is the first of the major European tunnels to initiate deep renovation work on its structure. With the experience and knowledge gained from the renovation of the Mont-Blanc tunnel, it is hoped that the renovation of other tunnels, will be quicker, with less closure time and disruption to the transport network.
