Opening weekend for skiing at the Grands Montets - it started off cloudy, but the sun came out, and today was super nice weather, but cold...

Conditions this weekend weren't too bad on the pistes at Grands Montets, especially as the visibility gradually improved during Saturday, and today has been great, with blue sky, cold and dry air, and sunshine. The Bochard piste was the main thing to ski, with some smaller pistes over by the Plan Joran. Pistes are cold, hard and fast, with icy passages developing as they get skied.

There was even some powder to ski in some of the more filled-in bowls for those brave people who didn't mind trashing skis on rocks (there were a lot of rocks!)...

It was nice to get up to some lift-accessed skiing, and give the legs a good workout, and the surrounding mountains were stunning, when the fog bank shifted.

Les Houches has also had some pistes open for skiing. Next weekend they will open again, daily, along with some of the other ski areas in the Chamonix valley. Meanwhile, it looks to be a dry week ahead, but with some more snow hopefully by the weekend. The Grands Montets will be re-opening from Friday, so there isn't long to wait, and Courmayeur is open daily the other side of the Mont Blanc tunnel, for a classic Chamonix day ski trip.
